History of The Day

Because the Roman Empire persecuted the early Christians and many of them perished for their religion, the Church designated certain days to commemorate them. For example, in 607, Emperor Phocas presented the magnificent Roman Pantheon temple to the pope. The pope demolished the statues of Jupiter and other pagan gods to devote the Pantheon to “all saints” who had died as a result of Roman persecution in the first three hundred years after the birth of Christ.

The Pantheon church, which had been rededicated, received a large number of bones that had been gathered from other cemeteries. The number of martyrs prevented each from having their day, therefore they were all given the same. In the following century, Pope Gregory III changed All Saints Day to the current date of November 1.

According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, All Saints’ Day was formerly observed on May 13 but is now celebrated in November. However, it is impossible to pinpoint the exact date of origin. Pope Boniface IV, who founded what is now known as All Saints Day, dedicated the Pantheon in Rome as a cathedral on May 13 in the year 609 AD in honor of the Virgin Mary and all martyrs. When Pope Gregory III, who governed from 731 to 741 AD, built a chapel in Rome’s St.
