The goal of Global Handwashing Day (GHD), a global effort to promote handwashing, is to inspire and mobilize individuals to change their handwashing practices. It’s necessary to wash your hands frequently throughout the day with soap.
Every year on October 15, the world observes Global Handwashing Day. The goal of the international campaign is to increase public awareness of the importance of soap-based hand washing in illness prevention. With proper handwashing, the incidence of intestinal and respiratory infections can be decreased by 25–50%.
The Day’s History
The Global Handwashing Partnership established Global Handwashing Day as a chance to develop and put into practice original strategies for inspiring people to wash their hands with soap, particularly in times of need.
The inaugural Global Handwashing Day was commemorated in 2008. Since then, this national holiday has been used to educate local and national influencers and officials on the value of keeping one’s hands clean. This is a very essential message to remember since, despite being such a simple habit, hand washing may change things and save lives.
Global Handwashing Day keeps expanding. Schools, governments, international organizations, private businesses, civil society groups, and more support it.
Celebrations of The Day
- Make a social media post
Share on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media sites to spread the word about the value of washing your hands.
- Get active
By purchasing handwashing posters and pamphlets, you can raise awareness of Global Handwashing Day in your neighborhood by putting them up in public places like parks and schools.
- Wash your hands often.
After using the restroom and especially before using the kitchen or eating, always wash your hands with soap.
The theme for World Handwashing Day in 2022
The topic for this year, “Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene,” reminds us that we are all united in our desire for everyone to have access to and practice hand hygiene. It calls on society as a whole to collaborate as we scale up hand hygiene. Any role can participate in Global Handwashing Day.
Implementation and Management
To promote a local and worldwide vision of handwashing with soap, the Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP), formerly known as the “Public Private Partnership for Handwashing” (PPPHW), created Global Handwashing Day in 2008. Colgate-Palmolive, FHI 360, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Procter & Gamble, UNICEF, Unilever, University at Buffalo, USAID, the Water and Sanitation Programme at the World Bank, and the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council are some of the organizations that make up the GHP’s steering committee. Along with GHD, an ongoing study on handwashing customs and procedures is commissioned. The results of a 2011 study sponsored by Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) on the handwashing practices of people in the United States and Canada revealed that many of them did not wash their hands with soap.
Global Handwashing Day’s declared goals are to:
- Encourage and support widespread soap-based handwashing in all societies.
- Bring attention to the level of handwashing in each nation.
- Promote the advantages of soap-based handwashing.
