A brief history of the day

The Treaty of Versailles, one of the agreements to formally conclude World War I, established the groundwork for a “League of Nations.” On June 28, 1919, the pact was signed in Versailles, France. The league aspired to promote disarmament, avert war from breaking out, support diplomatic efforts to resolve international conflicts, and generally raise standards of living. The start of World War II, however, made it clear that the League of Nations needed to change its structure.

The concepts for the UN were created in the final years of World War II, especially during the United Nations Conference on International Organization that took place in San Francisco, California, starting on April 25, 1945. On October 24 of that year, a UN charter was passed, which resulted in the creation of the UN.

On October 24, 1948, the inaugural United Nations Day was marked. Since 1971, the UN has advocated for United Nations Day to be a national holiday in all member states. In order to highlight the contributions, accomplishments, and functions of the UN and its network of specialized agencies, there have also been calls for United Nations Day to become an annual international public holiday. These have been outstanding, especially in the areas of support for famine relief, disease eradication, health promotion, and refugee settlement.

The World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the United Nations Human Rights Council are just a few of the many specialized organizations with which the UN collaborates (UNHRC).
