Feast of Our Lady Guadalupe

Feast of Our Lady Guadalupe (2024): Wishes & Quotes! By fusing Christian and Aztec traditions, the Marian apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Virgen de Guadalupe), which occurred on December 12, 1531, gave rise to Mexico’s national emblem. Like the Mexican people, Our Lady of Guadalupe has mixed racial and ethnic heritage. The image-bearing gown is honored in Mexico City’s Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tepeyac Hill.

This day is particularly notable for Americans of Mexican origin since Mary, the patron saint of Mexico, is reputed to have appeared to a man twice in Mexico City in 1531. Over 10% of Americans, or 33.5 million people, claimed to be of full or partial Mexican ancestry in 2011, according to the US Census Bureau.

The apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego

When Juan Diego, a local and poor man, first saw Our Lady of Guadalupe in the sixteenth century, he gave her the Marian name. The description of this Marian apparition was written by scholar Antonio Valeriano in Juan Diego’s native language, Nahuatl, according to the Vatican News (an Aztec language).

On December 9, 1531, Juan Diego saw Mary on Tepeyac Hill, which motivated him to see his bishop, Fr. Juan de Zumarraga, asking him to build a church where she first appeared. Mary informed Bishop Zumárraga to appear to Juan Diego, but he didn’t believe her and sought proof.

Mary approached Juan Diego once more when he arrived at Tepeyac Hill. She told him to go and get a flower and bring it to the bishop, albeit it was winter. Juan Diego visited Bishop Zumárraga as he returned with the flowers in his tilma, or mantle.
